I graduated from the University of Leeds in 1989 and trained in Internal Medicine and Haematology in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. In 2002, I was appointed as Consultant Haematologist & Director of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and subsequently worked as Lead Clinician in Haemato-oncology for the Trust (2002-07) and Cancer Network (2007-10). My principal focus is the day-to-day provision and strategic development of tertiary level haematological cancer and BMT services (autologous, allogeneic, haplo-identical and cord blood) for Sheffield and South Yorkshire Region (covering a population of approximately 2 million). In 2012, Sheffield became the first Anthony Nolan collection centre outside London, thereby forming an important component of the Aligned UK Bone Marrow donor registry. In 2014, our services were recognised nationally in the Health Service Journal Awards as Cancer Care Team of the Year and I have been specially commended as an Anthony Nolan Clinical Supporter for 2014 and 2015. In June 2016 I was appointed as Chair of the NHS England National Specialised Commissioning Clinical Reference Group (CRG) for BMT, overseeing current and future service provision of BMT across NHS England. I am Chair of the Intercollegiate Committee on Haematology (ICH) to the RCP and RCPath (2017-20) and President Elect of the British Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BSBMT).
In conjunction with my NHS roles, and my Honorary Professor status with the Department of Oncology and Metabolism, I have contributed to research and educational activity in Haemato-oncology, Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) and Stem Cell Biology. I have published over 220 clinical and scientific articles, reviews and book chapters, and led on key national and international clinical guidelines (Scopus h-index 38). I have organised numerous national and international conferences in BMT, Stem Cells and Late Effects in Cancer Survivors, both in Sheffield and elsewhere in the UK and Europe.
I am Chair of the EBMT Autoimmune Disease Working Party (www.ebmt.org) and Chair of the JACIE organisation (www.jacie.org), which oversees the accreditation of BMT programmes throughout Europe, having been Medical Director from 2012-2016. I am the current Secretary of the British Society for BMT (BSBMT). I am active in multicentre clinical trials and a member of the NCRI Haemato-oncology Clinical Studies Group (CSG). I have had key leadership roles in the areas of patient safety (NCEPOD SACT chemotherapy audit) and in NHS England National Specialised Commissioning (Clinical Reference Group for BMT). I was Lead Clinician for the updated NICE Improving Outcomes Guidance (IOG) in Haematological Cancers (www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng47) and a guideline development group member of the NICE Guidelines for Multiple Myeloma (www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng35).
In January 2016, our work on stem cell transplantation in MS featured in a BBC Panorama documentary.
